Pictures at an Exhibition

We are always looking for unusual combinations of musical styles, away from the obvious. For Pictures at an Exhibition, this principle has been implemented very deeply. Extreme contrasts between classical, jazz, world and rock music create a special musical experience. But also in terms of timbre, the band digs deeper than ever before. Saxophonist Iman Spaargaren plays clarinet and bass clarinet in addition to tenor saxophone. Vasilis Stefanopoulos and Maciej Domaradzki contribute greatly with their double bass playing. Moreover, drummer Jonas Linnemann adds congas to his regular drum set. Pianist and composer Paul Stark has adapted Pictures at an Exhibition in such a way that wonderful combinations of sounds can be heard.

Music for almost everyone
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition has always appealed to people’s imagination because of its visual power and originality. It is considered to be the most edited piece of music in history. The piece is well known in the classical music scene, there have been many versions for symphony orchestra’s as well as marching bands and small combo’s even the famous rock band from the seventies Emerson, Lake & Palmer made an adaptation.

Pictures at an Exhibition by the StarkLinnemann Quartet has been premiered at the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St-Petersburg Russia in 2018. Check out the video live @ The Royal Concertgebouw here.
